Rooting your Xoom with Ice Cream Sandwitch (ICS)




These steps will wipe all your data, and possibly destroy your tablet, so proceed with caution.
  1. Install the Android SDK tools from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
  2. Boot your Xoom, and press the volume down button repeatedly until you get a menu pop up in the top left hand corner.
  3. Press the volume down button to select Fastboot, and press the volume up button to load it. You should get a message saying Starting Fastboot protocol support.
  4. Open up the Command Prompt, and go to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools
  5. Enter the command fastboot oem unlock
  6. Follow the prompts on your Xoom screen to unlock the device. This will take a minute or two, and the Xoom will then reboot.
  7. Press the volume down button repeatedly again, and load the Fastboot option again.
  8. Download the ClockworkMod Recovery image from http://dc364.4shared.com/download/CvYJG7uO/recovery-clockwork-4004-stingr.img, and rename it to recovery.img
  9. Go back to your Command Prompt (still in the  C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools directory), and run the command fastboot flash recovery e:\Downloads\recovery.img (in my case the img file is in e:\Downloads - replace this with the location of your img file).
  10. Once the flash process is complete, reboot the Xoom by pressing the volume up and power buttons together.
  11. Once the Xoom has rebooted, connect the USB cable and copy the superuser package, which can be downloaded from http://dc430.4shared.com/download/g3yzbrIa/su-install.zip, to the root directory of the SD card.
  12. Shut down and restart the Xoom.
  13. Press the volume down button repeatedly again, and load the Android Recovery option.
  14. In the ClockworkMod Recovery screen, select install zip file from sdcard
  15. Select choose zip file from sdcard
  16. Select su-install.zip
  17. Select Yes
  18. Go back to the main menu, and reboot the device.
  19. You should now have the Superuser application installed.
If you get a picture of a dead android when you try to boot into Android Recovery, repeat steps 7 - 10.

Authenticating via Kerberos with Keycloak and Windows 2008 Active Directory

The following instructions show you how to configure Keycloak with Windows AD in order to use Kerberos authentication. Assumptions The Kerberos realm is VIRTUAL.LOCAL The hostname used to access Keycloak is virtual.local. This just means we are running Keycloak on the domain controller. Fixing OpenVPN "Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: cipher final failed"

When connecting to a VPN I was constant getting the error Mar  8 09:29:27 openvpn[1696]: Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: cipher final failed I had imported the supplied ovpn file and had followed all the other configuration steps, so this was quite frustrating. Then I saw this in the logs: Mar  8 09:31:07 openvpn[1790]: WARNING: 'cipher' is used inconsistently, local='cipher BF-CBC', remote='cipher AES-256-CBC' Changing my client to use "cipher AES-256-CBC" instead of the default (which apparently was cipher BF-CBC) fixed the issue.
