The end of an era

A few years ago I started writing for a startup called Brighthub. They offered a simple revenue sharing model that allowed me to make a few bucks sharing my programming experiments with the world. I had fun, I made a few dollars, and I posted some in depth tutorials with information that was not (and still is not) available elsewhere on the web. I know, because there were times where I gave up Googling and just worked it out for myself, and then blogged the results.

I learned a few things doing freelance blogging:

  1. Read contracts carefully, because you are probably just one email away from being dumped and control of your content being taken away
  2. Don't take it personally, because for every anonymous coward who slams your work under a nick like "LinuxGuru", there are 10 others who found some value in your post
  3. Minimum word counts suck, because they just lead to lots of empty words
  4. SEO sucks,  because it just lead to lots of empty words
  5. And, most importantly, do it for fun, because there is no money in it

Brighthub has stopped accepting content from the community; a victim of the Panda update. I briefly toyed with the idea of reposting all my old content here on Blogger, but it was simply too much work to copy and paste the code, fix the links and upload the various archive files. And it would have violated rule 5: do it for fun.

All is not lost though. If you are looking for something that I previously posted with Brighthub, you can find it (in a raw form) in the following archive:

Please note that unfortunately the source code downloads for some of these posts have been lost.

Also found some value -- the HTML5 game tutorial was fantastic. Sorry to hear things didn't work out. :)

Matthew,

I'm going through your Ogre3D game tutorial, and have hit a bump, since all of the resource files you use were hosted on Brighthub and are no longer available. Could you upload the source files and resources somewhere please? The tutorial is a great help to me, and I'd like to continue following it.

Very appreciated that you uploaded those HTML pages. However, could you also upload the files associated with your Flixel tutorials? I was working my way through them and took a break, then came back to find the tutorial was gone. :(

Matt,
Just wanted to say that I found all your tutorials really useful. I was just working on through the flash adventure game tutorial but now it is gone. Is it possible to get the TAT and the Flex source code as I foolishly didn't download it before it all became unavailable. Hope that you are able to help.
Kind Regards,
Ian

Hello Matt,

I'm almost a complete beginner in programming and found your blog immensely valuable, especially the tutorial on the inner life of a shoot'em-up game. Unfortunately I was also foolish enough not to download all the files at first sight - today I entered your old blog's address to do that and found they were gone. Anyway, I for one sure hope that you will find a way to continue making programming tutorials as your writing is both very informative and enjoyable to read!

I enjoyed your posts very much and I a very happy you uploaded your posts as HTML pages. Thank you very much!

Perti and Owen - Unfortunately I no longer have a copy of the source code that accompanied these tutorials, and I did not receive a copy when Brighthub shut down the Hubfolio service.

Does anybody have a copy of the old files that accompanied the tutorials? Can you give consent for somebody to rehost them somewhere if they have them?
